Jerry "Arkansas Slim" Vaughn, 77, of Springdale, Arkansas, went to be with the Lord July 20, 2020 at his home. He was born August 17, 1942 in Harrisburg, Arkansas, the son of Melvin Riley and Ollie Ferguson Vaughn. Jerry left school in the 7 th grade to work in the cotton fields. When he was 14 he left Harrisburg to work in the tomato plant in California. He then moved on to Arizona to once again work in the cotton fields. The family then moved to Springdale where Dick Steward, Jerry's cousin, bought a Diamond International truck and Jerry started driving for him in1960. Dick then traded for a truck from J. Smith. Jerry then leased a truck from Ted Saums and hauled for them beginning January of 1961 at the age of 15. In August of 1961, Jerry traded for a larger truck from J. Smith which he drove for about one year until it caught fire. He drove for J. Smith until 1965 and then went to work for Willis Shaw. In 1971 the trucking industry went on strike for Teamsters Union. In 1972 Jerry went to work for Daisy BB, hauling BB guns all over the United States. On June 22, 1976 Jerry went to work for Jones Truck line driving for them until they went out of business in 1991. He then went to work for Shiloh Trucking, hauling Wal-Mart products to California. After that he never worked in the trucking industry again. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Larry Melvin Vaughn.
He is survived by his son, Johnny Vaughn and wife Heather of Frisco, Texas; ex-wife and longtime friend and mother to his son, Lavonne Vaughn; sisters, Nancy Colene Martin and Shella Jean Vaughn both of Springdale, Arkansas; nieces, Tammy Clines, Jennifer Vaughn and Angie Erskin; nephew, Brook Martin and numerous great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
Graveside funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M., Friday July 24, 2020 at Elm Springs Cemetery under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home, 3926 Willowood Avenue Springdale, Arkansas 72762. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. Thursday, July 23, 2020 in the chapel of Memorial Funeral Home.
