Obituary

Ellis James Poisall, of Springdale, 87 years old left his earthly home for a final round of golf in heaven above; where he will be joined by a host of angels, and if in the sky today we could hear, and see thundering and lightening, it would be a sure sign that Ellis had a hole-in-one like no other. In a place we can only imagine.

Ellis J. Poisall was born February 5, 1934, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He attended the public schools of Fayetteville, and after high school he attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. One of my first visits to the family home there in Springdale. Ellis took us to the U of A campus to see a sidewalk, with his etched name. Along with literally thousands of other names of graduates of the University, you could sense the pride he felt.

In 1956, while at the University he joined the ROTC program, and also joined the Arkansas National Guard.  Upon graduation he resigned from the National Guard, and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. He attended the Quartermaster School at Ft. Lee Virginia, and then was assigned to Ft Irwin California; where, he was assigned as Commissary Officer, and also became a valued member of the Ft. Irwin Golf team. He left the active Army in 1959 as a 1st Lieutenant, and served in the inactive Army Reserve, until receiving an honorable discharge in 1965. He then began his professional career with the Goodyear Tire Company, working as a manager in its stores in various locations, including Carthage Missouri, Coffeyville, Kansas, and Manhattan, Kansas, before returning to Springdale. In Coffeyville, Kansas, while managing the Goodyear store, he happened to re-meet a friend from his college days at the University of Arkansas, and within a short time, fell in love, and he married her. This next month on October 30th, Ruby and Ellis would have been married 54 years. Soon after, they returned to start their home in Springdale, and also about that time, he became a partner in ownership of the Springdale Goodyear Store.  He was there until his retirement.

Ellis was an excellent golfer.  As a child he learned early as his father was also an enthusiastic golfer, and took Ellis golfing with him often. Ellis was on his high school golf team and continued improving his game, and playing on the golf team while at the university.  While he was in the Army he participated in the Ft. Irwin, California, Golf Team.  The team traveled throughout the 4th and 6th Army areas for military sponsored golf tournaments.  Back home in Springdale, Ellis joined the Springdale Country Club and had been a member of the country club since 1971.  One of his main enjoyments was that he and Ruby lived right at the No. 10 Tee box. As you might imagine, it was easy to get in the golf cart, open the garage door, and travel less than 100 yards to the Tee box, for a great round of golf.

Ellis is survived by his wife Ruby, a resident at the Fayetteville Health and Rehabilitation Center, a daughter Glenda Jolene Burke of Leawood, Kansas, one granddaughter, Julie Lawson of Stilwell, Kansas, two great grandchildren Ben and McKenna Lawson, and two nephews David Behl, and Randy Behl of Prairie Grove, and niece Ellen Savitt of Bullard, Texas.
